Dr. Stratton, born in Bridgeton New Jersey, is in his 87th year and served as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church Natchez 1845 to 1894, later named pastor emeritus. Governor approves new charters for Bank of Ruleville, Epstein Land and Improvement Co, and The People's Building and Loan Association with various incorporators and $50,000 capital in each.
A polished oil painting of the late Jacob Thompson, donated by his Nashville daughter Mrs. Van Leer Kirkland, bears a plate detailing his life. It lists his birth in 1810, death in 1885, service as a U S Representative from 1839 to 1853, tenure as Secretary of the Interior 1857-1861, as lieutenant colonel and inspector general C S A 1862-1863, and as confidential Confederate agent in the Dominion of Canada 1865-1864.
