A four story brownstone at 149 West Twenty third Street burned after four this morning. Two women, Mrs Catherine Mossway and her four year old daughter Beatrice Mossway, died from smoke and burns, while three others were seriously injured. Fire started at the foot of the stairs and spread rapidly trapping residents including Mrs Bowles and others on the upper floors. The fire caused about 2000 dollars in damage and origin is believed to be an accidental match strike in the hall.
Arrangements for a chess match between five U S House members and five British MPs are nearly complete. Games start May 41 at 2 PM Washington time and 7 PM London time, four hours per session, with a possible finish on June 1. A consultative game will be scheduled later.
May 21 New Castle Pennsylvania two accidents dominated the day. A blast at the Roseva furnace owned by Mark Hanou and ex Senator Cameron injured manager Reis and about 29 others. A 70 foot trench collapse at New Castle Traction Co. killed Michael Kurdy and seriously injured Peter Herinsky.
The annual meeting of district grand lodge No 4 order of Muai Writh began its session yesterday morning. The district covers Ohio Indiana Kentucky Kansas Missouri Colorado and New Mexico with 45 lodges represented. A key action was Rabbi Levi of Cincinnati leading a movement to remove prejudice against the Jewish race.
Police recovered charred bones and blood stained clothing from behind Adolph Lutgerts home as part of the wife murder investigation. Bone analysis will confirm human origin and chemical tests will check for liquor stains on the garments.

The New York yearly meeting of the Society of Friends continued all day in the Stuyvesant square meeting house with public worship, morning prayer, a school union for children, and an evening Young Friends association where Mary A. Nicholls spoke on whether Friends are clear of materialism. Meetings were also held in Brooklyn.
Mixa Cordius Cole of Bedford Louisiana won the elocutionary contest medal at Herdin College in Mezier Missouri. Contestants included Carrie Ketan Little Rock Arkansas Mary Adair Warren Arkansas Edna Lang Maywood Missouri Virginia Dyas Columbia Missouri Minnie Talbott Texarkana Texas and Maude McCoy La Porte Texas.
Walter Kennedy of Pittsburgh has taken charge of the Chinese iron works at Hai Yang under Sheng Toati. He is producing 10 foot steel rails at a rate of 129 per day and is praised by Chinese officials for organizing the large plant. United States Consul Chili reports the officials are pleased with Kennedy's skill.
In Jackson May 1 to May 2 the senate and house tangled over capitol site plans and a penitentiary proposal while conference committees sought compromise. A decisive vote backed the Gordon plan for the capitol site, and a second conference then favored the present site with penalties and public works funding debated.
