In San Francisco on May 1 Miss Barber christened the battleship Ohio as about 50 000 spectators gathered along the cove and Union Iron Works. The ceremony featured a bottle breaking and a gun salute as the Ohio slid into the water. the ship’s design includes armored turrets six inch decks and a multi deck layout with two 12 inch tubes and a 28 round ammunition magazine.
The Ohio, sister ship to the Maine, is described as steel built with a lead water line of 77 inches, breadth of 77 inches, and a mean draft of 22 feet 6 inches. It features side armor two feet above and four feet below the water line, with belt and casemate armor varying in thickness, and displaces about 12,000 tons.
In Lincoln Nebraska Bishop Bonacum refused to let Mrs McEntee of Plattsmouth move her son Edward Cagney's remains from the Catholic cemetery. She sought exhumation to lay him beside another son. The bishop asserts ecclesiastical law protects the dying man’s wish, plans to act against movers, and the matter may go to court.
London report cites Tiflis dispatch to the Daily Express stating the shah of Persia is dying from kidney disease. The room and time not specified. no further medical details provided.

George Archer Brown of Fayette Senecaty reports capturing a full grown white muskrat during the high water at the submerged Montezuma marshes.
