Public records dispute the common belief that Maj Gen Nelson Miles ordered Jefferson Davis’ shackling. Mr Shippman of Meridian, a former U S Army lieutenant, asserts Secretary of War Edwin M Stanton issued the orders to Miles. Shippman recounts removing shackles after two hours and sending Davis items to Miles, including a wife’s coin.
May 4 reports from Europe indicate Richard Croker letters to Tammany old guard leaders. Conferences followed with Croker set to reach New York late in August and assume leadership in effect. Deputy U S Marshal James W. Duggan of Columbia is hospitalized with a bullet wound after a violent confrontation at J L Brysentine’s home in Summer County. Brysentine, an alleged moonshiner, resisted arrest with a knife and then with a Winchester rifle, as Brysentine’s ally fired a shot through a window. Woodall was also present and Brysentine threatened him, prompting a pursuit to Gallatin and Nashville.
In Washington on May 4 public memorials were held in the Hall of Representatives for the late Amos J. Cummings of New York. The ceremony drew most of the House and Senate and filled the galleries as the casket rested below the Speaker's rostrum before being taken to New York that night.
In Paris Texas on May 3 Mrs Mary Roberts was found guilty of second degree murder as an accomplice in the death of her husband near Mazer last year. She received seven years in the penitentiary while the victim, about eighty, was found with his throat cut. Judge Kilian, a hired man, previously convicted of the murder, serves a five year sentence. Roberts testified for the State and provided information under the deal.
Chattanooga Tex aroused as the Board of Bishops of the Methodist Episcopal Church filled city pulpits this morning. A great union meeting was held tonight in the Auditorium addressed by Bishop Thoburn of India and Bishop Fowler spoke on mission work in China.
In Paducah on May 3 Mrs Hattie Jones faces indictment amid a Hart County charge case. Details are sparse in this fragment but indicate ongoing legal action linked to external charges and regional authorities.
A May afternoon storm in St Louis caused strong winds and heavy rain with lightning starting several fires. One fire destroyed a machine shop and damaged a section of the area, with emergency crews responding quickly to outbreaks across the city.
Venice date May 3. The pardon granted by King Victor Emmanuel to all officers of the United States cruiser Chicago imprisoned there arrived Friday morning and the prisoners were released at once. Washington May 1. Capt Dayton of the Chicago reports the party released on pardon and on board.
In Venice on May 2, Lieut. Doddridz and companion say they were sober and attacked after an accidental cafe table upset. They insist they acted in self defense, deny striking the police, and blame language misunderstandings for the incident while describing prison conditions as crowded.
Washington May 1 The state department reports Mexico refuses extradition of Charles Kratz the St Louis fugitive citing lack of reciprocity assurance The fugitive is held at Guanajuato while Mexican authorities review the U S request If Mexico discharges him he will go unpunished and no prosecution will proceed there is no daily end noted in the release
Kansas City May 3. Members of the Produce Dealers Association of Kansas and Oklahoma warn that large packing houses are griping the business of shipping eggs and poultry to eastern markets. They cite four big firms holding 144 million eggs in storage while last year exceeded 1 billion eggs, and claim higher ship rates for dressed poultry to the seaboard jeopardize western dealers.
Gen. Funston was feted at the Windsor hotel by Colorado National Guard officers in a Dewey Day celebration. A Roosevelt message regretted not attending, and Funston responded to the toast about The Eighth Army Corps.
A detachment under Gen. Yuan Shi Kai suffers 40 dead while suppressing an anti indemnity uprising near Henan. Yuan plans to send three regiments to destroy towns around the fighting site. Also reported is the identification of the Burlington robber as Blinky Harris of St Joseph, with arrests anticipated.
In a Dallas reunion debate among veterans from several states the contention centers on which troops reached the highest point at Cemetery Heights during Pickett’s charge at Gettysburg. Mississippi and North Carolina claim the top honor with supporting anecdotes from Col. Stone and Gen. Harris, while Alabama and others push competing claims.

Des Moines May 3. Liz come injured and $50,000 in to property was the result of work of two tornadoes in Iowa. One struck Bayard Guthrie county and the other Weldon Welden and Van Decatur county. Injured include David Harden Bayard Hazel Williams Weldon Louis Williams Weldon Mrs O llara Welden. Two children will recover. Bayard storm left ground after passing town and damaged farms near Kippey. Eyewitnesses say debris killed one man and he was found under a tree. A second severe storm north of Rippey Greene county destroyed barns and carried timber to ground.
A severe windstorm struck Bayard and surrounding districts on May 3, damaging crops and buildings. Winds reached 70 mph, blowing down signs, snapping wires, and causing many structures to be damaged. No serious injuries reported except Hardy of Bayard sustaining injuries.
Six injured and one dead after a tornado strikes near Lebrville Des Moines May 3. A farmer J W Munirni and family suffered severe injuries as their home and outbuildings were demolished. A storm of hail followed, shattering windows and causing extensive damage across the area.
A series of late May incidents include a Spring Valley Wisconsin kerosene accident causing burns to Hill and several children, with damage to the house. A Clyde Illinois fatal fast mail collision with a fast freight killed the mail crew and injured multiple others. In Denver a jury linked a man’s death to unknown persons, and police arrested Mrs Nellie Gabrin for murder in a separate case.
