Pittsburgh April 27 The Revision Committee of the Weat missier Conference reports unanimous action on revising the Presbyterian creed. The committee proposes a summary of the reformed faith and amendments to key sections, to be submitted to the general assembly in Philadelphia May 16. The plan preserves doctrine while clarifying interpretation and love for all men.
Newton F Chamberlain, who is raising the wreck of the Maine in Havana harbor, says the ship will be afloat and ready for business again next fall. He reports the vessel lies level, 37 feet 6 inches to solid bottom, and notes a dam and pumping will free the bow for repair before refloat. Paris spy Iovanovitz linked to Krupp gun secrets.
Mississippi items report Gov. Longino and Col. McInnis discussing the June 3 corner stone of the capitol, with the governor defending his stance and honoring Confederate leaders. Almo Wisconsin April 27 L P Hunner on trial for illegal banking pleaded guilty to receiving money after knowing the bank was insolvent and was sentenced to one year at Waupun.
Thomas Ketchum alias Black Jack, famed southwest desperado, was hanged near Folsom New Mexico after a 1899 train hold up. The execution drew 150 witnesses as the rope failed to break the neck on the first drop. he muttered farewell and cried Let her go. Authorities recount a long career of robberies, captures, and trials culminating in this death sentence and reprieve history.
A Denver Post report from Clayton New Mexico dated April 26 1900 notes that Thomas E Ketchum who faces execution in Clayton writes to President McKinley claiming three men in Santa Fe penitentiary Leonard Albertson Walter Huffman and Bill Waterman are innocent of the 1897 Stein s Pass robbery while naming the true culprits Dave Atkins Ed Bullion Will Carver Sam Ketchum Broncho Bill and himself and offering to aid recovery of stolen articles and witnesses.
Macon Georgia April 27 two men boarded the Central of Georgia express from Atlanta to Savannah robbed the car between 12 50 and 1 50 am seizing Express Messenger J N White bound him and rifling parcels securing about 250 with a 1000 package left intact the safe resisted entry the robbers dropped off at Jordan twenty miles from Macon detectives and officers scour the country two suspicious men were seen near the union depot two nights ago watching the car and were ordered away by White.
A burglar believed to be Z C Worley leaped into the Missouri River at Pett on, Iowa, during a chase by three constables and perished mid stream. A farmer later found his loot in a field, and a squad watched the area for two nights before a surprise capture. The body washed to shallow water and was recovered. Worley’s name appeared in his pocket book.
Two burglars forced the Alaska saloon door, moved a 300 pound safe into an express wagon, drove beyond the city, pried the safe open, and carried off $10,000 in gold before fleeing. The crime occurred in Anacorda Mont on April 27 with the burglars escaping after loading the loot.
Paul Krueger, a German gardener of 79 Winnetinac Avenue, Chicago, had his stomach cut out at the Illinois Medical College Hospital by Dr Eads. It is the third successful operation of the kind on record. The cancer ate the stomach. Krueger is recovering and will eat only predigested or vegetable foods henceforth.
The Rosebud mine at Aurora Missouri caved in burying five men at a depth of 110 feet and 70 feet from the main shaft. Workers report the entombed men Grant Bigeler Elmer Bigeler William Shane John Gilland and Andrew Foster were alive at seven o clock last night after tapping on rails. Rescue efforts involve several hundred workers in relays and may take three days to reach them.
