Captain Mead has dined with United States consul general Percy M D Leon during his stay.
Paris reports that the Rochambeau dedication in Washington on May 24 is viewed as France key opportunity. The Echo De Paris urges a French warship and high ministry representation to honor the Franco American friendship and Prince Henry's recent visit.
London reports Field Marshal Lord Wolseley will depart for Cape Town on Saturday in what officials call a private visit. Gossip links the journey to the South African military situation, noting his South Africa experience could aid Lord Kitchener at Cape Town or Pretoria. Wolseley insists the trip is private.

Edward Boyle a plumber's helper descended into the East Fifty third street sewer seeking an obstruction. A broken rung sent him plunging into churning water three or four feet deep. He rode the sewer current for three quarters of a mile before surfacing at the East River and was saved by a nearby scow crew. He refused ambulance aid and walked away unharmed despite the harrowing ordeal.
W M A Rodenberg of East St Louis resigns from the United States Civil Service Commission to take effect April 1. He submits a letter to President Roosevelt expressing thanks and seeking continued administration support. Roosevelt accepts with regret and praises Rodenberg as a public servant.
Brigadier General Frederick Funston arrives in Washington with aide Lieutenant Mitchell to pay respects to President Roosevelt and Secretary Root. He plans to stay until next week then head to Oakland where Mrs Funston is. His Philippine leave ends April 10 and his next assignment remains unsettled with a preference to remain in the northern U.S. to recover health.
Judge Coxe of the United States circuit court ruled the secretary of the treasury lacked authority to define five years as a permanent loss of American citizenship for expatriates. The case involved duties on paintings by a Philadelphia artist living in Poissy, France, with Paris consulate initially denying American artist status. The ruling favors the importers.
Maj Gen David S Stanley retired A S A dies in Washington and will be buried at the Soldiers' Home cemetery with full military honors. Funeral services set for Monday at St Matthews church. Escort includes troops from Fort Myer and Washington barracks. honorary pallbearers are retired generals and colonels. His wife, who died while he governed the Soldiers' Home, lies beside him.
Rupert Fritz, a chef at Shooter's Island luncheon for 2000 guests for Emperor William's yacht launch, says he borrowed silverware from friends for the event. In the rush for souvenirs most of the silverware disappeared before he and his team noticed. Fritz chose to make an assignment to cover the losses.
New York March 15. Norman and Dike appointed sheriff of Kings county by Gov Odell ejected Charles Guden from the rooms occupied by him in the sheriff's office. Guden offered no resistance.
Charges submitted to the state department question if an ambassador may have financial interests affecting duties. The debate focuses on the propriety of Powell Clayton's investments amid long running opposition with no clear law on the matter.
New York report states Gerhard Terlinden of Oberhausen Germany has sailed as a prisoner toward Europe to stand trial in Prussia on a charge of issuing forged checks totaling 3 000 marks.
Berlin March 15 The foreign office denies rumors of a change at the German embassy in Washington and states that Dr Van Holleben the present ambassador would not be furloughed or recalled.
Washington reports the secretary of the treasury will stop bond purchases Saturday after noon at the close of office hours. The action ends ongoing purchases and affects markets and investors awaiting government debt operations. The date is March 15 in the source.

A series of storms caused heavy rain and flooding across Northern and Middle Georgia and parts of the Southeast. In Georgia a cyclone near Macon claims a life and devastates residences, with multiple structures damaged and families rendered homeless.
