Missouri congressman W. W. Rucker, chair of the house committees on Presidential elections, is preparing a bill to provide for the direct election of the president.
William Cheney Ellis of Cincinnati was found guilty of murdering his wife Eleanor Haven Ellis in a Chicago hotel on October 16 1913. The jury imposed a fifteen year sentence in the state penitentiary after three and a half hours of deliberation. Ellis claimed temporary mania and said his wife had a presumed affair with Fred G Cauldwell of Brantford Ontario.
Claude Anderson cashier of the failed Mercantile Bank was indicted and released on a $10,000 bond. A joint indictment charges President C. H. Raine and the cashier with larceny embezzlement and fraudulent breach of trust totaling $326,000 tied to a September 24 1913 check signed by Raine and twelve other worthless checks used to mask a $1,091,000 shortage. Anderson faces four indictments including false bank condition statements to the superintendent and accepting deposits while insolvent.
A masked bandit halted Southern Railway mail car No. 11 from Charleston to Columbia as the train entered Columbia. He abducted several registered mail pouches after forcing the mail clerk to face the wall, then jumped off before reaching the station. C. E. Thomas notified Union Station authorities.

Aberdecen Hardin Adams a cashier of the First State Bank of Prairie Mine escaped Monroe county jail where held since the preliminary hearing. He accessed the kitchen via the jailor room and dumb waiter using salt as a ruse then fled after climbing back to the kitchen and escaping through the open door. Sheriff alerted, bloodhounds used with no success. Guile Marber promoter of Pirot State Bank of Prairie indicted on two counts. Derber, freed on bond, arrested and jailed.
Mrs. D. M. Halbert was awarded $900 by state reimbursement after her husband Dr. A. M. Halbert was killed when a clock weight fell from a county building lobby. The incident occurred in Argue t and involved Howard Clock Co of Boston. A prior $3,000 suit in federal court was dismissed. A 1912 bill authorized up to $1,000 in Lowndes county.
The board of mayor and selectmen enacted an ordinance banning distribution of any newspaper or circular containing articles intended to ridicule or degrade a citizen.
