Lafayette County Wheat Club Organized for War Aid

The Lafayette County Wheat Club formed at the Lafayette County Court House in Oxford to fund a county defense association and boost wheat production for war needs. Officers elected include President E O Davidson and Secretary H Friedman. a 15 member committee will recruit solicitors from school districts to canvass farmers for pledged acreage and seed wheat, aiming to secure a local flour mill.

23 Boys Leave for Camp Pike

Nearly one thousand people gathered at the depot as 23 Lafayette county boys entrained for Camp Pike. The group, praised as fine, featured speeches by Lieut Gov Lee M Russell Dr Somerville Prof Bondurant Dr Milden and Judge Kimbrough.

Six Times Nine Play by Camp Fire Girls at Oxford Public School

A play titled Six Times Nine directed by Miss Ella Somerville and assisted by Boy Scouts will be performed Friday June 28 at 8 30 p m at Oxford Public School. Admission 25 cents benefits Liberty Loan. The cast includes Princess Vara Elizabeth Bell Countess Alexis Mary Paine Wendel and others with Mrs Hapgood’s Seminary pupils in supporting roles. Act 1 shows the Garden of Prince Felix’s hunting lodge in the Alps Act 2 depicts a room in the lodge that evening.

Red Cross Picnic Postponed For July Fourth

The Red Cross picnic scheduled for July 4 in several Raleigh area locations has been postponed with plans to announce a new date later. Local volunteers and participating groups including Union Grove Union Hill Violet Hill and Riverside will be notified once rescheduled.

William A Emmerson Found Guilty by Federal Jury

The jury in United States v Wm A Emmerson found him guilty of harboring soldiers known to be deserters. Judge Niles presided. Emmerson was defended by Lieut Gov Lee M Russell with U S Hill arguing for the government.
