Evansville dispatch reports Jake McDowell a Black man was taken from Webster County Kentucky jail by a small mob at about 2 am. The jailer Thomas Page asleep in a guard room was awakened as several masked men pistols pointed at him demanded McDowell surrender. McDowell was dragged from the jail driven down Providence road and shot dead with three bullets. Authorities say mob members unnamed dispersed after the killing. Childers deputy marshal had been wounded days earlier but survived.

Philadelphia reports William Eidelman 39, wife Elizabeth 37, daughter Anna 17, son William 7 of West Penguiken New Jersey, were drowned when their small rowboat capsized in Pensauken Creek below Riverton. All four bodies were recovered as father had just paid off his mortgage.
Gen Stephen D Lee longtime commander of the United Confederate Veterans died at the National Military Park residence after a long illness blamed on stroke and exhaustion. He aided reconciliation between blue and gray and planned to address veterans in Birmingham. Public schools closed, flags at half mast, and tributes poured in from national and Southern leaders.
Gen Stephen D Lee is laid to rest at Friendship Cemetery in Columbus Mississippi after a May 2 1908 funeral at his home.
