In federal court Judge Woolson acquitted John C. Newton president of the Des Moines and Kansas City railroad of conspiracy to defraud the government. Newton banqueted the jury at the Saverne hotel and the judge publicly warned him, then discharged the jury from further connection with the federal courts.
The Agricultural Appropriation Bill for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1896, completed by the House Committee on Agriculture, carries 507 400 in excess of last year. Increases include 509 000 for meat inspection and 20 000 for forestry and rainfall studies, with other boosts to the Weather Bureau and seed distribution. Decreases total 37 000 across botanical, entomological, fibre, furniture repairs, and sugar experiments.
Mr Harris of Minnesota from the committee on invalid pensions reported to the house yesterday against Mr Berry's Illinois bill on pensions for foreign or nonresident pensioners. The measure, if passed, would unjustly affect veterans entitled under current law.
