He blew the safe, forced Engineer Wilson and Messenger Laub into the car, but Wilson knocked the robber out with a broken car piece. The attacker was captured and turned over to county authorities. passengers were unharmed and valuables remained secure.
On May 29 Philadelphia officials announced the Ceited tas Impreiement Ca. withdrew its bid after a lengthy protest from Israel Wo Parham’s opposition. Thomas Dolan, company president, sent a letter to city leaders retracting the proposal to surrender $25 000 in exchange for extending the lease. The move followed talks with Commissioner Durham and others who blocked gas lease resolutions from reaching council.
A violent wind storm plus a closed shelter struck Joplin Missouri Sunday evening, causing several thousand dollars in damage to downtown businesses. Water surged through Willow Branch and streets, with inches of water in the Elk Saloon Saddle Rock Siments Furnishing Goods and part of Newman’s department store. Pumps will be needed for days to remove flooded basements and cellars.
Norfolk May 2 fire raged in the Hamilton’s forward hold after two and a half hours of effort by the crew who escaped. The ship left for New York then returned to Norfolk at 3 20 or so. No passengers aboard. The hold was flooded and the distress signal sent to the company offices. A company ship reached the distressed vessel but the fire was under control enough to return to Norfolk at full speed.
New York report states Charles H. Van Brunt, presiding Judge of the appellate division, died suddenly at the Brooklyn bridge entrance. Heart disease was pronounced the cause of death.
