Auditor Cole reports Mississippi banks increased resources by 2,560,544.71 and numbers rose from 17 to 129. Total resources reach 26,544,846.83 with July cash on hand at 8,550,929.0. The showing suggests over 95 percent of capital and deposits are invested or in circulation.
From Francisco July 25 James Jeffries defeated Robert Fitzsimmons in a dramatic eight round bout to win the heavyweight title. Fitzsimmons, battered and bleeding, was knocked out and declared unable to continue as Jeffries claimed the championship. Jeffries praised his foe while Fitzsimmons indicated this would be his final match.
A navy department cablegram from Commander McLean in La Guaira dated July 24 notes the Venezuelan president with troops sailing to La Guaira this afternoon and mentions only 300 soldiers at Barcelona with rumors Valencia has fallen. Also a local obituary notes Rev T C Reed president of Taylor University died recently in Upland Indiana.
A Pennsylvania Limited passenger train derailed at Trebein station near Xenia Ohio after a coal car separated and rolled down a grade crashing into the engine. The wreck burned rapidly with many deaths and injuries including two postal clerks and the engineer and fireman among the dead.
Southern Gleanings reports executions in Greenville Mississippi with Ashly Cocke and Tom Lauderdale for murder of an engineer, Cocke’s defiant last words, and a Georgia case where Betsy Bryant, a white woman, is to witness a black man’s hanging for a marshal’s murder. Also notes ambush at Matewan West Virginia, lynchings in Kosciusko Mississippi, hospital and poor farm charges in Paducah, and the death of ex congressman J C MacDearmon in Memphis.

Rt Rev W R Barnell dies in Selma after appendicitis surgery. Frank White, Hopkinsville farmer, shot dead by unknown assailant. Cadiz Ky fire wipes out several blocks with losses around 60 000 dollars and insured 20 000. Dallas exposition fire in Texas destroys main buildings at 150 000 loss. Camden DC fire destroys an entire business block at 70 000 loss. Charlies Hackinger shot and killed in Memphis by photographer W T Brooks.
A major fire in Albany on a Friday morning felled the public market building and spread to the Columbus hotel and Elks clubhouse. One fireman died, another severely burned, with several more injured as losses are estimated up to 750000. Heaviest losses include Lanz Rubber Stamp Works, Crucible Steel, Lester Parker Furniture, Albany Robber Tire Wheel, Huth Fisher Shirt, Cadby Paper Box, Wertheim clothing, Columbia Hotel, and Albany Lodge of Elks.
A Tucson dispatch reports five killed and many injured when the southbound International train derailed near Liano 79 miles south of Nogales. The engine and several cars fell into a washout embankment. the engine was buried up to its wheels. Three passengers were seriously hurt and a brakeman and an engineer died. Mexican employees also perished.
Six men were hanged in Arkansas on Friday for murder. At Washington Dee Noland and Cesar Wallaceburg were executed. at Arkansas City James Kitts. at Porrest City Cy Tanner. at Van Buren Dave McWhorter. at Center Point Lath Hembrea. Also a cholera outbreak was reported in Cairo with 118 new cases.
Coroner's inquest into Cecilia M. Sullivan's death reveals she survived 13 hours after being shot, with one bullet through the heart another through the stomach liver and spleen and a grazing wound to the heart. Walter Famine in Trinidad Colorado reports a water famine leaving the city without fire protection and water bought by the bucket. W L Meyer US ambassador to Italy visited the president at Imache in a social call.
The Palace of Liberal Arts in St Louis is now set for April 1 1903 occupancy with dedication on April 30 1903 and Saengerfest events June 17 20. Barrett Haynes Barrett cut costs by about 79000 and reduced central pavilion size. The building features 139 foot peak height and large Corinthian columns while preserves key statuary and figures.
In a letter from World’s Fair commissioner Johan Rice Chandler, President Zelaya of Nicaragua and Fernando Sanchez call for a joint Central American pavilion at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition. Nicaragua Guatemala and Salvador accept. Chandler believes Costa Rica and Honduras will join.
In Sioux City on July 25 H K Kennedy of the National Millers Federation denied any concerted plot to defeat Speaker D B Henderson in his bid for re election. He said the federation does not engage in politics and exists to protect trade interests and duties.
A large Nantasket crowd gathered July 25 as the New England Democratic League hosted a banquet and speeches by William J. Bryan Edward M. Shepard and others. The event stressed party harmony with no candidate boomed and outlined aims to unify Democrats across New England states.
United States Judge Jackson held Jones and seven other Hungarian mine workers in contempt of his injunction of June 19. They received sixty to ninety days in jail. Counsel plan habeas corpus petitions in the U S Court of Appeals at Richmond arguing lack of jurisdiction in the Jones cases.
The Lehigh Coal and Navigation Co resumes operations at its No 12 mine in Tamaqua Pennsylvania, the largest colliery in the area. The move signals renewed activity as miners return and plans shift toward mining coal again.
