Nearby Hudson lost the roof of his house and more damage was reported as the twister crossed the Red river region and damaged grain.
A yacht named the Arctic from Michigan's Lake Superior region sank two miles offshore during a test sail from the Sagatuck area. Three men, including the boat owner M. S. Tilworth and two builders from Costes & Stilson, perished, leaving families behind. Lifesavers recovered only a cap. no others were saved as the crew failed to reach safety.
Hon Frederick Romano congressman from the eighteenth Illinois district died at his home in the city yesterday morning after more than three months illness. Born in Fayette County Illinois in 1867 he enlisted in the army and later engaged in commercial business. A staunch Republican he served in the state legislature in 1874. Funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon under McIlwain Post No 271 G A R with James Cohnell of Springfield invited to speak.
Bradstreet reports at the close of the second July week that general trade remains practically unchanged though activity is more conspicuous in midsummer. Prices stay strong with exceptions in cereals hog products coffee and lead while favorable outlooks for fall trade and wheat and corn crops across central western and northwestern states provide encouragement.
Word reaches port that the steamer Mexico owned by Elder Dempster Co of London foundered in the Straits of Belle Isle and is a total loss. Five persons were killed by a powder magazine explosion at Tivoll eighteen miles northeast of the city.
In Meurois Tennessee on July 14 the jury could not agree in the trial of Dominic Seanone charged with the January murder of Charles Tait a street car conductor. Tait’s alleged role in indicting Seanone’s father for selling liquor without a license sparked the fatal quarrel. The killing was described as a cold blooded one.
Judge John D. Easton learned Friday of the death of his twin James DD Easton at Montverville. Both men were in their seventy ninth year and were perhaps the oldest male twins in the United States at the time of James Easton’s death. James Easton visited Paris, Texas, often and had many friends there.
In Bostos on July 14 crowds filled city churches as Endeavorers attended services led by speakers from abroad. No formal meetings were held yesterday, but many participants gathered for preaching and worship across the community.
A U S commission in Grertowns Nicaragua reports a favorable outlook for a canal linking Atlantic and Pacific. They note dredging can ease entrance at the harbor, propose a sea wall to curb sand buildup, and estimate six to seven years for completion with costs above project limits, roughly 1160000 dollars. George de Haven resigns from his general passenger railway post to become managing editor of the Chicago Mail. He had long been with the Pennsylvania Railroad passenger department and is a well known railroad man and resident of this city for five years.
