A 1920 census report shows Oxford shrinking since 1910, with the county also dipping from 22,110 in 1900 to 21,888 in 1910. The piece blames lack of a strong commercial base and political discord, urging local merchants and citizens to unite to reverse the decline.

The Union county vote count from last year showed Mr. Russell with 1966 votes to Mr. Johnston 1054, a 912 vote margin.
