Maj. W. IL Francis of Decatur cites Alabama as his lifelong home in a May Jam missive from Washington D C. He dismisses New York newspaper schemes to appoint a police commissioner and affirms plans to remain in Alabama while acknowledging gratitude for support from readers and officials.
New York editor Col. Mann testified in the Hargest criminal libel trial that he borrowed nearly two hundred thousand dollars from J P Morgan James K Keene W K Vanderbilt W Whitney and others. Most loans were repaid in Town Topics stock at one dollar per share. The largest loan came from James K Keene of four hundred thousand dollars.
John D. Fairless was killed today by Mrs. E. B. Whitten at L. Marks' store in Marks. Whitten, widow of Fairless who had killed her husband months earlier in Essex, fired five shots, striking Fairless in the head and elsewhere, then sought an officer at the Commercial Hotel to surrender.
In Houston on January 23 a strike involves about four workers at Humble oil field. Moonshine and Texas company plants are shut down due to non recognition of the union and discharge of union men. Strike leaders say extension to other fields is a last resort. managers refuse talks.
