Reports note intense cold in Germany, a fatal street incident in Cologne, rail accidents near Bordentown, and local deaths and pardons.
The Pacific Mail steamer Rio de Janeiro struck a rock in dense fog at the Golden Gate and sank. About 120 lives were lost, with many bodies not recoverable. Dispatch from Lord Kitchener reports Boer forces retreating in scattered bands toward 5,000 strong before French near Piet Retief. Amsterdam and Met Relief buildings occupied. Swazi frontier protected. Plumer reports Captures of Wet’s Spaan der and pom pom plus 59 prisoners. De Wet urged to shift for themselves as De Aar telegraph notes.

It notes 255 baptisms by Manila Methodists, mentions Salamanca’s arrest and expected vindication, and reports insurgent captures near Polo Bulacan with rumors of Gen Torres’s surrender.
