He entered the navy in 1862 and rose to rear admiral in 1906 retiring in 1909 at age 62.

In Harrisonburg Virginia Fitzhugh Comer shot and killed his betrothed Misa Cora Turner aged 20 on church steps and then died by self-inflicted action.
