The town of Oxford was largely deserted on Christmas Day with few shoppers and many residents bird hunting in woods. The university echoed the holiday quietly as students were home. no incidents were reported and fire works sales burned through the holidays. Merchants welcomed strong Christmas trade while cleanup the next day returned the village to normal.
A discussion on when sales inducement is appropriate in retail. Merchants now view each purchase as part of exchange, aiming to satisfy and retain customers who leave with exactly what they wanted. Inducing extra purchases is ok if it complements the original item and is not pressed if the customer resists.
An entertainment program for the Oxford public school benefit is planned at the university chapel this Thursday night. The card lists performances by Miss Alice Friedman, Miss Gladys Tobin, Mr. Herron Rowland, Mrs. E. D. Beanland, Mr. David H. Bishop, and the group OVERTONES directed by Mrs. Paul Cannon, with a cast including Miss Ella Somerville and others.

Mrs. Jane Connor age 84 died at the home of Mr. and Mrs. E Barry north of town Tuesday night after a long illness. Survived by three daughters and one son including Mrs. E Barry of Oxford and Mrs. Nina Smith and Mrs. Ellen Woods. Son J N Connor of route. Interment was Wednesday at Clear Creek graveyard near Burgess. Family and friends extend sympathy.
J. Ss. Keel, age 76, died Sunday in Birmingham Alabama while visiting a son. Remains were brought to Oxford Tuesday and buried at Dallas cemetery. Born and raised in this county, he had lived in Holly Springs with another son in recent years.
The remains of John Keel who died December 24 in Birmingham Alabama were brought to Oxford and laid to rest at Keel Cemetery near Paris. He leaves four sons Dan John Jim of Birmingham and Sam of Holly Springs and a daughter Mrs Frank Taylor of Oxford.
The popular Oxford High School teacher Miss Mildred Hannah of Pulaski Tennessee married Friday evening to Mr McLaurin a Brandon Mississippi businessman. They left for a bridal tour to the East and will reside in Brandon Mississippi after.

Rev and Mrs W I Hargis of Oxford Mississippi announce the marriage of their daughter Rosa to Mr Guy D Modlin of Corinth Mississippi. The ceremony was performed by Rosa’s father on Wednesday December 27. After a brief bridal trip they will reside in Corinth.
Mr W W Reel and Miss Willie Marle Furr wed at the First Presbyterian church in Tupelo in a small ceremony led by Rev Dudley. They plan a honeymoon through Handcock Maryland Washington and Baltimore before settling in Tupelo at Mrs Hutchinson's residence after New Year. Reel works as night clerk at the Southern Hotel and Furr formerly worked for Cumberland Telephone Co both noted for their friendship in Tupelo and among travelers.
Miss Pearl Wilson of Oxford and Mr. Fred Wallace of Water Valley were married December 28 in the Baptist pastorium by Pastor Roland Q. Leavell. Miss Wilson works at Rowland Drug Co. and Wallace runs a transportation business in Water Valley. They left for a honeymoon on the night train and will reside in Water Valley after returning.
