William Wooten Dies at 80 in Oxford Home

William Wooten age 80 longtime Oxford resident died at his home late Wednesday. He was among the last Confederate Veterans and is survived by several children. Funeral services were held today followed by interment in City Cemetery.

Fire destroys vast Jasper business district in five hours

A blaze in Jasper Alabama began at 4 20 a m in the Crawford Mercantile building and razed 20 business houses and 10 residences before 9 o clock. Losses exceed 500000 with the main block and parts of three others wiped out. The fire damaged the Southern Bell Telephone Western Union Telegraph First National Bank and the Southern Hotel properties.

Loving Cup Presented To The U D C S

The Albert Sidney Johnston Chapter of the U D C received a loving cup from Narmal-Tin and the Gotenerator Veterans and Lamar Rifles as thanks for courtesies to the remaining gallant band. Major General J L Shinault spoke and presented the cup to Mrs J Hicks, president, who responded warmly. Mrs P H Wright was named custodian.
