The senate reported four free list bills on sugar coal iron ore and barbed wire with ad valorem and specific duties. The house and senate adjourned in a short, largely uneventful session after debates on anarchist exclusion and other measures.
Workers digging a ditch near Sheridan New York on the 25th uncovered a mastodon skeleton. The skull measures five feet across the tusks are five feet long and six inches in diameter at the butt. A tooth weighed four pounds and measured seven inches by four.
A fire swept the Oregon Improvement mine at Franklin, 34 miles from the city. Thirty seven bodies were recovered, with many more feared trapped. Casualties include both white and black workers, and the blaze forced rapid evacuations as rescue efforts continued.

A gas blast at the Philadelphia Reading Tron colliery in Gilberton yesterday afternoon killed one man, seriously injured another, and left nine others injured to varying degrees. Local authorities investigated the accident and warned of lingering dangers in the mine.
A Daily News dispatch from Madison reports conductor Richard Goggin was thrown from a moving freight near Jefferson Junction by a dozen tramps. He was missed, the train could not stop until Lake Mills, and on return he was found beside the tracks near Madison. Goggin's home is Baraboo.
An explosion in the Philadelphia and Coal and Iron Co. colliery at Gilberton traps twelve workers. Polish boy Lewis Ball, age unknown, is reported dead. Rescue efforts proceed with great danger from after damp and hazardous conditions.
A Kingston Jamaica report dated August 15 cites a plot to ambush President Hippolyte near Port au Prince. Twenty four armed men lay in wait as he traveled with guards. a woman’s tip led to arrests while the bullets missed. The attack was aimed at the heart of the escort line.
Hackstons Maryland August 25 George W Reed a 51 year old miller at Emmett Bros planing mill met a fatal accident when a belt slipped pulling him into the geared shaft He was crushed torn by the machinery and died instantly The engineer stopped the mill after the accident Reed was unmarried and his death was recorded as sudden and horrific The Gaulois reports Germany may mark the Sedan anniversary one last time this year.
William T. Belding, formerly a clerk at the Hotel Metro pole in Puiraverpata, Pa, is believed to be about $1,000 short in his accounts after thefts were not found until after his dismissal. Police seek the former employee, rumored to be in Chicago, with additional money missing from the hotel.
Hon. Christopher Finley Frazer once minister of public works and later inspector of registry offices for Ontario was found dead in his room at the Toronto parliament building early this morning. Frazer had long struggled with poor health and recently resigned as minister. He was known as an eloquent speaker and an active liberal politician.
