The Outlook Flour mill under C M Jules posts a record year with turnover near twenty thousand dollars. The president and owner remains modest while praising the mill’s growth and local impact in Outlook and Edmonton.
A July 12 13 14 convention in Outlook draws on local help to house guests. A college and town hotel space will be used but lodging is tight so residents are asked to report how many visitors they can accommodate and cooperate with the committee.
Fragmented notes recount odd events and local gossip about Archolas ia and Mr Forde wtte, a fish outing at Long Lake with poor luck, patent training board talk, painting at Garber peg, and a Presbyterian church painting followed by a flying corpse remark. Teachers cancel conventions due to no rain and lack of use for umbrellas.
A fire at a riverside property belonging to Mr Chambers ripped through a barn and outbuildings burning five horses a cow and calf and eight set of work gear. Court records indicate the cause remains undetermined as firefighters and witnesses recover from the loss.
Abbreviated minutes of the council meeting held June 8 1918 in Broderick Bask with Reeve Riley and councillors present. Motions include adoption of prior minutes tax exemptions for bail insurance and soldiers’ wages grants for Outlook school and various land parcels, approving bills, naming roads as the canis highway system and adjourning to meet July 6 at Glen Tide Sask at 1 pm.
Examinations commence today at several centres with written tests scheduled through June 28. The Outlook notice states exams will be held at the public school, with high school pupils, college entrants, and outside candidates participating.
The report urges all 16 year olds to register on Saturday. Deputy registrars will receive registration forms and operate in council chamber from 1 to 10. Registrations will occur at Outlook council chamber and district schools in Guelph and Garden Valley for residents of Rudy municipality within the electoral district.
The gala day offers horse racing and other events with prizes in several races. Prizes include 100 for first in Feet-for-all and 75 for first in Three-minute Trot or Pace, plus 100 for first in Baseball. Entries close July 1 at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. respectively. An evening dance at Lyric theatre and additional attractions follow.
Gunner O. W. H. McKee among the town’s early volunteers for overseas service is commended for conspicuous bravery in duty. Official records note his August actions under heavy rain and gunfire, serving in telegraph work and enduring long days amid rifle and machine gun fire.
Wae Tepe will be received to noon on June 25 1918 for the removal of dirt excavated for the dormitory building at Outlook College. For particulars inquire at the Principal's Outlook.
One of the largest cattle shipments ever entering Canada moved through Outlook on Thursday and Friday en route to the Matador ranch south of Gington. The first train carried twenty five carloads plus three cars for attendants and horses with 990 Hereford stockers aboard. A second train followed with additional cattle from Murdo Texas and other ranches bound for market.
Visitors to Canada who do not intend to settle will not need to register. On Saturday authorities will only require proof they are not residents and will not demand residence certificates.
