Allies Press German Retreat Across Picardy Front
Saturday reports say British and French troops push Germans back along a 20 mile front across Picardy from Somme to Avre and Montdidier. Friday saw strikes at villages, more prisoners, captured guns and war stores, with heavy Allied losses for the Germans. 17,000 German prisoners taken to date plus many guns and arms. In Picardy the Allied front made steady gains with General Humbert forcing von Hutier to abandon Montdidier. Canadian forces reportedly captured many prisoners with losses heavy. Over 36 000 prisoners and more than 500 guns have been taken as French actions along the Ayres river line press on toward the north of the region.
