Great Floods Sweep Shenandoah Valley and Johnstown
A sweeping May 30 31 1889 storm caused record floods across Virginia West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Rail lines washed out bridges and crops while towns like Johnstown and New Florence faced massive loss of life and property with estimates ranging from thousands to over ten thousand dead.
