Black Brute executed on gallows in Maryland area
A black man named John Martin was hanged in Frederick Maryland on April 10 1870 for murdering an elderly white woman Mrs Margaret Butcher and her paralyzed husband in their Pleasant district home after a brutal assault lasting fifteen minutes. The trial followed at Frederick's Criminal Court with the death penalty chosen. The scene at the scaffold ended with the rope breaking his neck and the body given to his friends.
