Death of Henry Maschek Shocks Ottumwa Community

Henry Maschek aged thirty four died at his Ottumwa home after a four day illness. He leaves a wife and three children, plus parents and two Chicago brothers. A postmortem will be held to determine the cause, with mass at Sacred Heart and funeral at Calvary cemetery.

Lifter Leroy Edwards Dies in Anamosa Prison Hospital

Leroy Edwards, colored man from this city, died of pneumonia in the Anamosa reform school hospital Saturday. He had served a life sentence for raping Mrs. C. Erwin of Hayne Street after being identified by her and corroborating testimony. Funeral held at 4 pm yesterday at the home of his wife, 415 Myrtle Street, burial in Shaul Cemetery. Survived by wife and three children.

Bucket Shop Raid Shatters Consolidated Stock Exchange

Cincinnati, June 7. County Prosecutor Hunt and ten deputies raided the Consolidated Stock exchange accused as a bucket shop clearing house. Deputies used axes to wreck the offices and carried away paraphernalia. W. D. Klausman, B. H. Moorehead, and Louis Foster were arrested on warrants for bucket shop operation.

New Fixtures Installed for County Offices

The Board of Supervisors received new efficient fixtures for filing and storage. Auditor McCarty now has two steel sectioned cases with enclosed doors for orderly papers, less disturbance risk. Clerk Phillips received 316 document cases placed near the vault ceiling enhancing access and organization for public records.

The Ottumwa congregation packed Trinity Episcopal Church as Rev. W. C. Hengen delivered a brilliant baccalaureate sermon noted for its impact. The church choir performed a beautiful song service that morning, pleasing all in attendance.

Chief Makes Arrest on Theft Charge in Local City

Mitchell Williams, a young local man with a South Ottumwa mother, was arrested by Chief Gallagher on a burglary charge linked to a May 26 theft at F. R. McDaniel’s clothing store in Miami, Missouri. Clothes matching the samples found with Williams were worn during his arrest, and he will be sent to Missouri to face the charge. Williams was raised in Ottumwa and the chief suspects him in the robbery.

Bootlegging raid nets alcohol from Market Street saloon

Chief Gallagher with Officers Llewellyn and Ryttenberg raided the South Market Street building once used by Pete Maloney for a saloon and seized eight cases of beer two tubs of iced beer and half a barrel of wine. Maloney pled not guilty before Judge Morrissey and awaits a hearing later.

Mrs Clara A Scott of Ottumwa dies at 7 15 this morning at 215 East Woodland avenue. Funeral notice to appear in tomorrow's paper. Also Mary Moriarity aged eighty eight dies at her nephew James Murphy home 723 East Main street. Remains go to Keokuk for burial. Andrew Wilkins aged seventy one dies at 1 10 Sunday afternoon at his Keokuk township home. Funeral 1 30 this afternoon at home conducted by Rev Isaac Elder. Burial in Fiedlar cemetery.

Examination Dates Named for Teachers Certificates in June and July

Superintendent Burgess sets the test dates for teachers certificates June 22 23 24 and July 28 29 30 with the Wapello County Institute scheduled for six days starting in August. Mrs Burgess signs many honor certificates today for county school teachers with near 200 recipients for the year as a mark of merit.
