TWO MEN ESCAPE TOMB IN MONONGAHELA MINE EXPLOSION
Two miners Charles Craw and Philip Legler aged 36 were pulled alive from the Consolidated Coal and Coke mine at Finleyville near Pittsburgh after a 60 hour ordeal following a devastating explosion that claimed ninety six lives and filled the mine with toxic gas. Rescue workers J. McVickers and Clyde Gibson found the pair in room 10 entry 20 two and a half miles from the entrance. They survived on bread and sulphur water during their crawl to safety.
