Postcard from Key West to Cuba and back

A fragmented letter describes travel near Tampa and Cuba with mentions of camps, storms, people, and plans to return to Central America. It references Maine, Foley's Kidney Cure, and local advertisers, ending with a brief signoff and multiple ad-like lines.

Northwestern campus to be enclosed by high iron fence

The Northwestern University campus at Evanston Illinois will be surrounded by a high iron fence. The move follows a history of moonlit promenade trespasses by students and others, a former watchman’s discharge, and failed attempts by professors to police the grounds. A powerful night glass was briefly loaned before finally the board of control ordered the fence built with heavy gates and locks.

Punishment of Soldiers More Stringent Under New Army Order

By presidential direction Secretary Alger published a revised March 1895 order defining penalties for army offenses affecting good order. Desertion trends feature harsher penalties when two or more conspire or when desertion occurs during Indian outbreaks or unlawful assemblies. Persuading desertion carries forfeiture of all pay and one year hard labor. Disobedience of orders yields six months hard labor and ten dollars monthly forfeiture.

Foley's Honey and Tar no false hopes to consumptives

An old advertised remedy asserts it honestly treats consumptives without promising miracles. It claims to induce vomiting and relief even in severe cases and early stages, warning against deceptive claims.

Wrapped in the Flag. Sailor John Cheney Dies at 96

John Cheney, who claimed the longest service on the old frigate Constitution, died last Sunday in South Orrington aged 96. He served in 1812 and the Mexican War and kept a worn silk American flag from his sea chest. Despite his naval past, his pension was only 12 dollars a month and he endured religious fits that left him poor, carving wooden models of Old Ironsides to support himself. Veterans honored him at his burial in Mil Creek cemetery.
