Washington AP reports a panel of 60 influential Americans proposes cutting 1.5 trillion in spending and adding 376 billion in revenue to balance the federal budget by 2002. OHS seniors Megan Denton Heath Duncan Hayden McDaniel and David Testorff joined 35 000 students nationwide honored as commended students. McCune nears NMS finalist status after SAT in November with GPA transcript and a 500 word essay submitted. Merit Scholarships total 6 500 with two thousand dollars from NMS Corporation and additional corporate and college university awards.

Chad Horner a Kansas University marketing sophomore receives a $500 scholarship from Guy Steiner Country Mart co owner. Steiner and Steve Silverman sponsored Horner through the Kansas Food Dealers Association for high school grocery workers pursuing related careers. Horner is son of Gary and Janis Foster Ottawa and began at Country Mart in June 1989, now working part time.

The Kansas Department of Transportation announced bids totaling 9.8 million for state highway construction and maintenance across 16 counties, including Coffey. In Coffey, US-75 from Woodson to near K-57 will be resurfaced over 4.6 miles and a bridge replaced. bid of 3.56 million awarded to J H Shears Sons Inc of Hutchinson. A separate Coffey project seeks to replace the Big Creek Bridge on K-57, 3.1 miles east of US-75.
Congress passed legislation to reward medical training programs that place graduates in medically underserved rural areas. Sen Nancy Kassebaum said the bill would prioritize grants for programs with strong placement records, benefiting University of Kansas Medical School and similar efforts, as part of broader Public Health Service renewal.
