Government reports show 3.3 percent GDP rise in spring
The Commerce Department revised second quarter GDP up to 3.3 percent from 2.8 percent, a gain over winter but the smallest in over a year. The rise follows a 4.5 percent jump in January-March, as energy prices trimmed consumer spending and the economy slowly regains footing from the 2001 recession. The Bush administration will cite the revision as evidence of a continuing recovery, while challenger John Kerry questions the pace.

Supreme Court to rule on local power to seize homes for projects
The Supreme Court will hear a Connecticut case on whether local governments can seize homes and small businesses for projects that generate tax revenue. The dispute centers on whether takings count as public use when property is not blighted but cleared for hotels, offices, and other ventures in New London. Plaintiffs led by Susette Kelo argue the city’s plan is an unjustified taking.
