Recycling events in Anderson County October 7
Two disposal events on October 7 offer household hazardous waste collection at 9 a.m. in front of the Noxious Weed Department on West Seventh Street and a recycling center at the Anderson County Fairgrounds starting at 8 a.m. The program, led by Vernon Yoder, accepts paints, solvents, cleaners, pesticides, motor oil, and related items while excluding explosives, tires, asbestos, radioactive materials, and compressed gas cylinders.

Longtime Ottawa optometrist to retire after 40 years
Rod McClay will retire on October 1 leaving his Main Street practice to James Eaton at 316 S Main. McClay opened the 4015 Main building in 1955 and joined VOSH missions to Guatemala and Haiti. Eaton inherits patients and equipment and will continue services. McClay and his wife Pep plan trips to visit their four children.

Juveniles charged in shooting death at Pine Manor Apartments
Six teens face charges in the Ottawa shooting death of Stephanie Perez. One was charged as an adult, Toby Webster Lurber, 17, bond 25,000. Names of other juveniles and hearings outlined, with two to three suspects still at large. Witnesses and evidence continue to be gathered. Perez died from a single .22-caliber bullet. the murder weapon recovered alongside another pistol. Perez’s mother Paula Ellis spoke of moving to a farm and organ donation. Burial planned in Raytown, Missouri, with a memorial service in Ottawa.

Group seeks 16,417 signatures to gain Kansas party status
United We Stand aims to collect signatures within 180 days to become a recognized political party in Kansas. It must start by Oct. 11 to meet the April 11, 1996 filing deadline with the secretary of state. Kansas now has Democratic, Libertarian and Republican parties. United We Stand previously gathered over 55,000 signatures in 1992 to place Perot on the ballot, drawing 27 percent of the vote in the state.
