Hesse Vote Bolsters Schmidt as FDP Loses Seats

Voters in Hesse backed Chancellor Helmut Schmidt's Social Democrats, denying the Free Democrats representation for the first time since 1970 and boosting Greens to nine seats. CDU led with 45.6 percent, SPD 42.8 percent. FDP fell to 3 percent, with Greens entering parliament for the first time. Schmidt framed the result as support for immediate national elections and the anti coalition stance.
