Soil Conservation Service as Promotional Agency
Charles Weickert argues that the Soil Conservation Service acted as a promotional agency in the 1930s, fostering local conservation districts to combat gullies and dust storms. He cites vast results: 3,000 districts, windbreaks, terraces, minimum tillage on 24 million acres, flood prevention worth 270 million dollars, 16.6 million tons of sediment trapped, 347 million in erosion control benefits, job creation, and new recreation in rural areas, expanding multicounty efforts and guiding growth with soil surveys.
