Fortas nomination blocked as petition filed in Senate vote scene
Washington AP A petition to end Senate debate on the Abe Fortas nomination to the Supreme Court was filed by Senate Majority Leader Mansfield after Dirksen signaled he would not vote for cloture. A 1 pm Tuesday vote was set on the petition requiring two thirds to cut off debate. Mansfield filed with 23 signatures, 16 Democrats and 7 Republicans. Dirksen noted Fortas faced scrutiny over a $15000 lecture fee from five executives and left open whether he still supports Fortas. Fortas had sided with the majority on several technical rulings reversing lower court films. Opponents have used these votes and viewings of the films to attack his confirmation.
