New simulations bolster single moon outcome in giant impact theory
New computer models by Camp and colleagues in Nature reproduce a disk forming a single Moon rather than multiple moons. The study simulates 1000 to 2700 debris bodies from 37 to 435 miles wide, showing one moon in two thirds of runs and suggesting an ancient impact three times Mars’ mass. Earth would spin roughly twice as fast, a question under investigation.
