Ottawan Girls Die In West Fort Scott Crash
Two student nurses from Ottawa died Friday after a two vehicle crash 27 miles west of Fort Scott on US 54. Martha Hashman 18 and Marie Bongiorno 22, both residents with Ottawa ties, were en route from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing to Ottawa when their car slid into a westbound semi trailer in misty, wet conditions. The driver of the truck suffered only minor injuries. Hashman was a 1970 Ottawa High School graduate and engaged to be married. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery after services.
