Transport Rules Can Save Mills in Kansas
Topeka based transportation attorney Byron Gray says regulation of trucks barges and railroads hauling wheat offers the only hope for survival of Kansas milling as rail rates fall and motor and barge transport rise. He notes Kansas mills process about 100 million bushels yearly retaining 30 percent as mill feeds supporting the feed industry and livestock sector. The case, representing the Kansas Corporation Commission, is before the U.S. Supreme Court with ongoing litigation on wheat and flour rate reductions and plant closings in Kingman and Winfield.
