Earth Dams Have History Which Is Older Than Man
Earth dams have a long history of usefulness and durability. Beavers likely built the first dams, and ancient engineers in India and Ceylon constructed many earth dams for irrigation. Some reach sixty feet high and over a mile long. Today earth dams store water for flood control, power, irrigation, and public supply, with Fort Peck in Montana noted as the largest, at 124 million cubic yards of fill. An earth dam must hold water, stay water tight, be structurally sound with a safety margin, and include a spillway to bypass excess flow. The structure comprises foundation, dam proper, and spillway and control works working together to prevent failure.
