National service idea goes astray in rival bills
Washington lawmakers approved multimillion dollar civilian national service bills, but sponsors say the packages diverge from their vision. The House passed a 193 million National Service Act while the Senate backed 125 million with broader aims, and a 35 million demonstration link to financial aid remains in dispute.

Surrogate custody case moves to California courtroom
A childless couple and a surrogate agree to a 10,000 payment for a baby made from their egg and sperm. Weeks before birth the Calverts and Anna Johnson clash in a high stakes custody dispute with a fetus attorney arguing best interests. Experts see a potential landmark ruling or a narrow decision. A pre trial hearing is set in Superior Court. Harold LaFlamme represents the fetus. Gene link questions and best interests frame the case as it tests surrogacy legality and parental rights. California’s family law tilt could influence the outcome.

Corn crop may boost livestock industry in 1990
USDA economists say a bumper 1990 corn harvest of 8.12 billion bushels and higher supplies will ease feed costs for ranchers, farmers, and feedlots, but lower corn prices could cut grain farmers’ profits. The 1990-91 marketing year may see use reach about 4.7 billion bushels with prices expected around 2.10 to 2.50 per bushel. Southard notes pork production may rise by about 3 percent next year.
