A Centerville teen, Evan Ray Sumners, 17, died Saturday afternoon while three men worked on a house in Ottawa. Edward Marmon, 16, and Michael Brannan, 32, were injured after contact with a bad extension cord. Marmon was flown to KU Medical Center in good condition, Brannan stayed for observation at Ransom Memorial Hospital.
Two major polls show two thirds of Americans favor using military force against Iraq. Democrats and independents show rebound in support as Bush gains with Newsweek and ABC News This Week polls. Newsweek reports 70 percent job approval, up from 61 percent in August after his UN speech.
The city will advertise for bids mid October for a $9 million sewage treatment facility designed by Professional Engineering Consultants. Construction starts when weather allows in 2003 with operation required by October 1, 2005, doubling current capacity from about 1.5 million gallons per day.
VICKIE MOSS reports that radio dead zones in Franklin County hinder dispatch contact for deputies in Lane Williamsburg and Wellsville. Weather and terrain worsen the issue. Deputies may switch to Lane fire or cell phones to reach help, while U.S. 169 near Lane remains a high fatality corridor.
