Bonner Springs defeated defending state champion Ottawa High in a 2-3-6-8 opening run by its top four runners. Jerry Peffly of Ottawa led all with 9:27 for two miles, but Bonner’s Willie Frazier and Mark Denning, plus Lyndon’s Greg Masenthin, pushed Bonner to 39 points to eclipse Ottawa’s 63 as St Joseph Shawnee and Bishop Miege trailed.
