Harvest beans look poor amid heat and drought
Local farmers forecast a below average soybean crop this fall due to insufficient rainfall and extreme heat. Ottawa Co-Op merchandiser Matthew Vajnar cites July heat as a driver for grim yields, with statewide expected ranges from 10 to 25 bushels per acre and harvest slated late September to early October. Some good ground may reach 30 to 40 bushels per acre in rare cases, but bottom land areas remain more favorable than upland.

Franklin County Sheriff eyes more patrol cars this year
Sheriff Jeff Curry says it makes financial sense to buy three new police vehicles this year and next year in one commit. He argues purchasing both batches now would be cheaper after a mishap earlier in the year involving a prior vehicle purchase.
