Ammoniated Wheat Straw Sparks Growth in Steers Versus Corn Silage
Kansas State researchers show ammoniated wheat straw nearly matches corn silage on cost of gain for growing steers, with ammoniated corn stover also promising. Trials at Garden City in 1979 indicate feed costs favor corn silage, but ammoniated rations offer viable alternatives in roughage-heavy diets.

Assessor Pursues 80 Percent Farm Machinery Appraisals
Franklin County Assessor Russell Wray said his office will continue to appraise farm machinery at 80 percent of fair market value as required by a state law. The Legislature's tax break is being challenged in Shawnee County District Court by Attorney General Robert T. Stephan who argues the measure is unconstitutional. If struck down the 1979 assessments may be adjusted earlier rather than later.
