U.S. forgives part of Bengal debt to fund forest fund
The United States cancels part of Bangladesh debt and redirects future interest into a tropical forest conservation fund. Over 18 years Bangladesh saves about $8.5 million, with a board including U.S. and Bangladeshi representatives and environmentalists to oversee the effort. The program, enabled by 1998 law, may extend to Belize and El Salvador.
