Area Farmer Custom Cuts Wheat Across States

Marvin Vallier of Richmond leads a multi state custom wheat cutting operation with two 20 foot combines and two large trailers. For eight years he and partner Leo Lash haul along a converted school bus and camper sleeping quarters in trailer courts. They cut about 5000 acres daily with yields ranging from 25 bushels per acre in Texas to 60 in Nebraska. Vallier cites aging, restaurant costs, and changing wheat patterns as factors in the yearly cycle.

Dee Ann Schuck and Nancy Sudja sold their 33 registered Holsteins at the Franklin County Sale Barn in Ottawa amid personal and family shifts. Several cows fetched notable prices, with Tricia selling for 11,550 to buyers from Hillsboro and Durham, and many animals remaining in Franklin County.

Music in hog houses may boost pig production study suggests

Kansas State University Extension veterinarian Dr. Lowell Breeden surveyed 43 Kansas swine farms to test if music in farrowing and finishing houses improves outcomes. He notes pigs appear calmer, with more pigs weaned per litter and less tail biting, but warns decibel levels risk ear damage to sows and piglets. He advises low soothing volumes and extra speakers and calls for further research to confirm results and potential links to weight gain and feed efficiency. The 30s and 40s tunes reportedly resonate best with the animals.
