In 1991 output was under 500,000 tons, while Kansas burned over 15 million tons that year, mostly imported from Wyoming. Last year 17 million tons valued at about 350 million dollars were burned, as one mine closed. Oil production peaked in 1985 and many major companies have left. Natural gas exports exceed imports, and 14,000 wells span 61 counties. Most gas comes from six southwest counties.
