The Associated Press reports 605 traffic deaths over the 78 hour Labor Day holiday period, surpassing the prior records of 563 last year and 576 for any summer holiday. Local time midnight Monday marked the tally.
Police reported three auto accidents over Labor Day weekend with one injury. An Ottawa woman Myrtle Bedgood, 69, was hurt in a two car crash at Eighth and Princeton and admitted to Ransom Memorial Hospital. Carl Peterson, 65, and John Bedgood, 71, were involved. Peterson failed to yield after claiming his foot missed the brake. The incident added to a holiday toll that could reach 630 deaths nationwide per the National Safety Council.
Senate opens debate on the House passed 1966 civil rights bill amid expectations of a filibuster. Supporters seek an open housing provision while many senators doubt passage this year. Key is timing and Dirksen’s hold, with talks possibly delaying or altering the housing clause.

AP correspondent T Jeff Williams reports a famine across Lombok island where Dr Arbain Yusuf says up to 80 000 could die and 15 000 tons of rice are needed to stave off starvation. In areas south of the green north hunger grows as rains fail and officials say little authority to redistribute scarce rice.
Ottawa Wholesale Grocery Co at First and Walnut announced it is discontinuing operations and liquidating inventory after serving the Ottawa area since 1899. President William W. Wallace cites the need to modernize and shrinking grocery markets as factors, notes the Teamsters strike did not directly affect business, and says the building may be sold or rented.
London reports John Lennon will star as a soldier in the film How I Won the War breaking from the other Beatles for the first time. He cannot wear the mophead hairstyle the group popularized, a spokesman says fans will clamor for the cut from New York to Nagasaki.
President Johnson launches an 18 speech Midwest tour drawing large crowds in Michigan and Ohio. A Dayton rally saw antiwar demonstrators scuffled with supporters but the president continued speaking. He defended U.S. force presence in Europe and reiterated no timetable for withdrawal from South Vietnam while insisting actions will follow aggression ending.
A noon check of Ottawa polls showed light turnout for the special pool bond election. Voters decide on authorizing 185000 dollars to replace the nondefunct Forest Park pool. Total votes counted stood at 694.
In Cape Town an assailant stabbed Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoerd in the neck during a parliamentary session. He bled on the carpet before MPs restrained the attacker. Verwoerd, a symbol of apartheid, died at Groot Schuur Hospital. David Pratt was the assailant, later sent to a mental hospital.
