Kansas National Guard members face deployment in Iraq
In Topeka Linn Elementary principal Rosalyn Carr and northwest Kansas trucker Wayne Ryba join others preparing for mobilization. Ryba, 32, heads to Iraq with the 891st Engineering Battalion after Aug. 11 orders. Carr will ship with the 174th Quartermaster from Fort Riley. Attorneys like Linus Thuston of Chanute also wrap up practices before training at Fort Sill Sept. 24. Families brace for long separations as children at Linn Elementary bid farewell and learn of military life through maps and questions about meals and keeping in touch. Carr reflects on civil rights heritage and the need for equal rights as her sons follow military paths.

Remembering a Night of Tragedy and Surviving Burns
Mell suffered 20 percent burns and a ruptured spleen after a late September crash near Eisenhower Road. The car overturned and exploded after hitting a bridge rail, leaving one leg shorter due to pelvic shifts from burn care. She recalls little of the event or days surrounding it, aided by medication, while coping with loss of a friend Tina. Two men nearby aided Mell and Candi Atchison. Vega’s fate remains unclear.
