Ottawa Cyclones eye future after state cross country showing
Ottawa High School boys cross country made its first state team appearance since 1996, finishing 10th at Wamego. Underclassmen lead the way as coach Chris Kornhaus sees this as a learning experience and a step toward higher goals next season. Freshman Brandon Yates led the team in 46th place with sophomores Sam White and others expressing eagerness to return and improve. The race tested nerves and technique on a crowded, fast course with tight racing and contact noted by coach and runners.

Staats shines as Ottawa football rookies fuel 56 20 win
Freshman Tanner Staats and converted linebacker Jeremy Cabrales stepped in for injured backs in Ottawa University’s 56 20 homecoming victory over Bethany at People Bank Field. Staats rushed 15 times for 63 yards, scored twice, and added a 57 yard kickoff return. Cabrales gained 19 yards on eight carries and Kodee Wood filled in at fullback with three rushes. Staats called the opportunity a long wait, saying game speed and no huddle offense tested him, but the effort paid off as he found the end zone twice.
