Incurable brain disease linked to hospital instruments
NEW ORLEANS AP A patient who died after brain surgery had an incurable disease that may have spread to eight other patients through tainted instruments. Tulane University Hospital destroyed the instruments after the first death. The eight living patients, all with brain surgeries, are receiving counseling and medical care while officials review sterilization procedures and patient confidentiality limits. The disease advances rapidly, leaving the brain with holes and spongelike tissue, with death usually within a year of symptoms.
