De La Torre joins Kansas migrant farmworkers panel
De La Torre, a former Ottawa police detective and Kansas Human Rights Commission investigator, was appointed Oct. 17 by Gov. Joan Finney to serve on the Kansas Migrant Farmworkers Coordinating Council. He will represent the commission with no additional pay. The governor’s executive order last June created the panel to coordinate state agency aid, monitor conditions, inform workers, and provide disaster support amid about 18 000 migrant workers entering Kansas yearly. The council will collaborate with public and private nonprofit groups.
